Yesterday, the sequel... er, sequels to Pokemon Black Version and Pokemon White Version were announced. To everyone's surprise, the next game would not be titled Pokemon Gray Version; rather, two games would be released-- Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2.

The mascots are shown to be strange creatures that resemble a cross between Kyurem and Zekrom and Kyurem and Reshiram, respectively. They appear to be referencing the Unova myth that Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyurem were once one great dragon-- but not in the way I had imagined. I had pictured Kyurem's alternate form as a fusion of all three dragons, which would seem more relevant to the myth. I was also hoping for it would be like that so I could use it in a large part of Plasma's Folly... but I managed to work my way around its absence and find a way to incorporate Kyurem's official alternate forms into the story instead. That's the only thing I'm genuinely disappointed in as of now... but the rest of the fandom seems to be up in a rage over these upcoming games.
The most commonly criticized aspects of these games are their names. I admit that they are unoriginal, but they say nothing about the games themselves. They actually make sense, however, considering that these games are direct sequels rather than Platinum-esque remakes. Something like this has never been done before, so people shouldn't have the right to complain.
Another thing that people are upset about are Kyurem's alternate forms. They criticize them for merely being "splices with Reshiram and Zekrom". That's kind of the point-- they're referencing the great dragon legend, albeit in an odd way. They're not "fresh out of ideas"-- they're doing what they think is right to stay consistent within the series. Aesthetically, I think these formes are actually quite interesting. Again, the only thing I dislike about them is the absence of a great dragon Pokemon.
Some fans are criticizing Black 2 and White 2 because they were anticipating something along the lines of a Ruby/Sapphire remake. I really want an RS remake as well, and I'm sure there will be one in due time. We have to remember that in Generation IV, Platinum was released prior to HeartGold and SoulSilver. Our hopes for a RS remake shouldn't be dampened just yet.
Of course, we also have the people who nitpick every aspect of the more recent games, because they claim that the newer Pokemon are "unoriginal/too different/too similar to other Pokemon". These folks are hopeless cases, as their visions are obscured with nostalgia. It's sad that they don't realize that even their precious Generation I was filled with lame, uncreative Pokemon, as well as every other generation. I also find the variety of excuses as to why they hate the newer Pokemon amusing. Some fans insist that the Pokemon are too "strange and different", while others say that they're "too much like older Pokemon". It's obvious that they'll make any excuse to hate these Pokemon, simply because they're not the Pokemon they grew up with.
I think it's interesting that they're releasing direct sequels rather than remakes, and two games instead of one. Generation V truly is a revolutionary generation. I'm looking forward to seeing what differences this set of games has in store.
