Today, my ELA teacher wasn't here for whatever reason; the sub never specifically mentioned why, but I'm sure we'll be hearing quite a story next class on Friday. The sub explained that we were going to work in the library today-- I'm not exactly sure why, the thing we were doing did not involve anything in the library in any shape of form. We could've just worked in the classroom like we always do... The library is right down the hall from the enriched ELA room. We bunched into it, and sat down at the tables grouped in one corner of the library.
Currently in ELA, we're reading books related to the Holocaust and filling out literature circle packets about them. My group, consisting of Michelle, a girl named Monika, and me, were reading a book called 'Night', which I think I mentioned in an earlier blog. I was bored, so I finished reading the book, when we were only supposed to read up to page seventy something. However, I was a bit behind on my packet... I still have yet to finish a page relating to the first third of the book. We started off by discussing what we had accomplished, which wasn't much to be honest. Then, I flipped open my packet and opened to the illustrator page-- for this, we had to create a wanted sign for a particular character in the story. And since all the characters in the story are humans... well, I had a bit of a problem. I took out a scrap sheet of paper and tried to sketch out a human just to show everyone how bad I am at them... I started to look for something to reference off of, and I decided to grab a random book off the shelf in hope that it would have a picture of a human somewhere on it. I reached for some book about computer engineering or something that happened to be by our table, and slid right out of the chair and fell on the ground. I don't think anyone saw me aside from Michelle and Monika, but I don't really care, since all of us were laughing anyway. I decided to throw the book back on the shelf, and I asked Monika and Michelle if I could reference off of them. Michelle agreed, but her head was at a funny angle so I told her to turn her head toward me, but then she just kept turning it the other way. In the end, I gave up. Michelle randomly started doodling on her literary luminary page, which turned into quite a mess by the time class was over. For some reason, I began flipping through my lined paper in the back of my binder (where I doodle) and we were chatting and laughing about that. Michelle suddenly flipped to this paper with all the Black and White sprites on it, and we spent a while discussing the Pokemon. Monika isn't a fan, but she isn't a hater either, and she actually seemed pretty interested in the sprites. Then, the sub walked over... I thought at once that we'd be doomed; we weren't accomplishing anything looking at the sprites. We were also laughing and talking loudly, posing a potential distraction to the rest of the class that were actually working. The sub looked at my sprite sheet, and asked, "What are those?" Michelle replied, "... Pokemon?" And then the sub started talking to us about Pokemon. She said that she heard a new game was coming out on the 17th... don't know where she heard that. She then walked away, and left us discussing our doodles and Pokemon. Wow, what a sub. She doesn't just let us get away with talking about something completely off task... she joins in, too! Well, I guess she's no better than that other sub who was texting the whole time, and allowed us to be as loud as we wanted during a test...
Monika and Michelle eventually started drawing each other... I can't really recall what Michelle's picture of Monika looked like, but Monika's picture of Michelle was scary... it had the head of an evil zombie clown, and this otherwise skinny body with a huge butt. I wish I could recreate it, but I'd probably end up screwing up all the details... Monika then started walking around, showing everyone the drawing... it was weird. By that time, class was over. If only ELA could be like that everyday...
